Volunteer of the Month
Volunteers are the foundation of our communities and of Richmond County as a whole. Their passion, dedication, and selfless commitment strengthen our communities, support local organizations, and enrich the lives of those around them.
To recognize the many volunteers, groups, and organizations that help shape Richmond County, we are pleased to expand our recognition program to include the following:
- Richmond County Volunteer of the Month
This recognition celebrates a Richmond County volunteer who has made a significant and positive impact within their community through their dedication, service, and commitment to helping others.
- In Memoriam Volunteer Recognition
This recognition honours individuals who have passed away but whose passion, generosity, and selfless dedication continue to inspire and strengthen the community organizations they served. Their legacy lives on through the lasting impact they made and the lives they touched.
- Richmond County Group/Organization Recognition
Community groups and organizations play a vital role in the strength, well-being, and vibrancy of Richmond County. Through their collective commitment, compassion, and service, they foster connections, address local needs, and enhance the quality of life for residents. This recognition celebrates the invaluable contributions these groups and organizations make to our communities every day.

Volunteer of the Month, January 2026
Pierre LaRochelle

Pierre never hesitates to give back to his community. He generously shares his time and expertise with numerous organizations throughout Richmond County, most recently supporting initiatives at the Bonnie Brae Seniors Club.
Pierre is also a dedicated volunteer at St. Peter’s United Church, where he is currently the lead for major accessibility renovation projects and can be found there almost every day, working to make the space more welcoming for all. When he is not involved in community projects, he contributes his knowledge and experience to the Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere, demonstrating his deep commitment to the people and places of the region.

Volunteer of the Month, December 2025
Sonia Morris
Beyond promoting active living, Sonia is deeply committed to serving her community through volunteerism and leadership. She generously gives her time as a board member of the Seniors Take Action Coalition, where she advocates for and supports initiatives that enhance the quality of life for older adults. In addition, Sonia plays an active role in fundraising and supporting vital local organizations, including the Hearts of Isle Madame, the local daycare, and area food banks, helping to ensure that essential programs and services remain accessible to those who need them most.
This past holiday season, Sonia’s compassion and generosity were evident when she hosted a free English-style Christmas dinner for more than thirty community members. Her efforts provided not only a warm meal but also a sense of belonging, connection, and holiday spirit for those in attendance.

Volunteer of the Month, November 2025
Bradley Malcolm
Bradley has been a dedicated member of the West Bay Road Fire Department for many years. He currently serves as Truck Captain and plays an active role in many of the department’s initiatives, including the membership committee and training programs, and he is also an Advanced Medical First Responder.
Recently, Bradley was voted Firefighter of the Year for the department, a recognition for his consistent commitment to going above and beyond
In addition to his work with the fire department, Bradley is actively involved with the West Richmond Riders Association, volunteering his time to help maintain and improve the trails throughout Richmond County.

Volunteer of the Month, October 2025
Francine Stanton
Francine’s kindness, compassion, and attention to detail make her truly deserving of this recognition. As a Meals on Wheels driver, she delivers more than meals; she brings care and connection to residents across the county. Her warm smile and friendly presence brighten the day of everyone she visits.
Francine also assists with packing and organizing incoming meal shipments and helps with client satisfaction surveys. Additionally, she manages supplies for the VON “hygiene closet,” to ensure clients receive essential personal care items.
Even in her spare time, Francine continues to give back by volunteering at the Arichat Food Bank.

Volunteer of the Month, September 2025
Kathryn Groves
In 2010, after thirteen years of living aboard their ship, Kathryn and her husband made River Bourgeois their permanent home and started Tiny Farm.
Kathryn joined the River Bourgeois Community Service Society Board of Directors as Treasurer, a role she continues to hold for 14 years, demonstrating unmatched dedication and ability. In addition, she contributes her time to the Fundraising Committee and is an active member of the Seniors Club.
Kathryn, the people of River Bourgeois are proud to call you and your husband their neighbours. We thank you for all you have given to our community and look forward to many more years of your involvement.
