As a responsible dog owner, you want nothing more than for your beloved pet to be safe and happy. Here’s what you need to know about the MOCR Respecting Dogs By-Law.

Dog Registration

All dog owners in the Municipality of the County of Richmond are required to register their dogs and get a dog tag by paying the annual fee on or before March 1st each year. During registration, you must provide information about your dog, which will be added to a database. This information is important in case your pet goes missing, as it can help you find your lost pet.

Dog Tag Fees

  • Female (unspayed): $25.00
  • Female (spayed): $10.00
  • Male (spayed or unspayed): $10.00
  • Replacement of a lost tag: $0.50

Purchase Options

Dog tags can be at purchased in person at the Municipal Office in Arichat or by mail.
To receive dog tag by mail, you must mail a cheque (with correct fees) along with your name, address, phone number, your dog's gender (indicating if they are spayed or unspayed) and their breed. The cheque must be mailed to:

Once the cheque is received, the Municipality will then send your dog tag to the mailing address provided.

Dog Owner Responsibilities

  • Pet owners are responsible for licensing their dogs annually;
  • The owner of every registered dog shall keep the tag securely fixed on the dog at all times;
  • All dogs must be under control when in public, and
  • Owners must ensure their dog does not cause disruption of the peace by persistent howling, barking or noise-making.

Violating the Regulations

Pet owners found to violate the Respecting Dogs By-Law regulations shall be liable, upon conviction, to pay a minimum fine of $100 up to a maximum fine payable of $5,000. Be safe, be sure, and register your dog!

If you are experiencing challenges with a dog in your neighborhood, it is important to address the issue by having a respectful conversation with the owner. They may not realize that their pet's behavior is causing disruption. If the issue persists, you can contact Animal Control by phoning (902) 226-2400 Monday to Friday, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm.
