Richmond County is calling on community-minded individuals to join our Agencies, Boards, Commissions, and Committees (ABCCs).
Municipal Council values community involvement and appreciates the contributions of volunteers in shaping a strong and inclusive municipality. In recognition of your time and dedication, we provide an honorarium for each meeting attended.
Current Opportunities
Strait of Canso Superport Board
Vacancy: One (1)
Term: Three (3) Years
Meeting frequency: Six (6) times per year
The Strait of Canso Superport Board oversees the development and promotion of the Strait of Canso as a vital transportation and shipping hub, with objectives including the planning and upgrading of port infrastructure, identifying opportunities for cargo and traffic, and advocating on harbor management issues. The Board is made up of volunteer directors who bring leadership and a deep understanding of marine issues, with members representing various sectors such as shippers, ship service providers, municipalities bordering the Strait, the provincial government, the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce, and First Nations communities.
Recreation Advisory Committee
Vacancy: One (1)
Term: Five (5) Years
Meeting frequency: Minimum of four (4) times per year.
The Recreation Advisory Committee supports the development of inclusive and accessible recreation programs and events across Richmond County. It provides recommendations to Council and the Recreation Department to help enhance the quality of life for residents.
Cape Breton Local Immigration Partnership (CBLIP) Council
Vacancy: One (1)
Term: Five (5) Year Term
Meeting frequency: Minimum of four (4) times per year
CBLIP Council members represent organizations that provide services to newcomers, including each municipality in Unama’ki – Cape Breton. Members serve as liaisons and champions of the CBLIP vision and are required to participate in four meetings per year. The CBLIP Council members help to identify gaps and opportunities related to newcomer settlement and support the development and evaluation of CBLIP strategies and activities.
Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere Region Association (BLBRA) Board
Vacancy: One (1)
Term: Three (3) Years
Meeting frequency: Six (6) times per year
The Bras d'Or Lake Biosphere Region Association (BLBRA) is a volunteer, not-for-profit board composed of individuals with diverse expertise, collaborating to achieve our strategic objectives. Member contributions play a key role in advancing initiatives focused on biological conservation, sustainable development, and community capacity building.
Destination Cape Breton Association Board (DCBAB)
Vacancy: One (1)
Term: Three (3) Years
Meeting frequency: Six (6) times per year
Destination Cape Breton is the official destination marketing and management organization for Unama’ki-Cape Breton Island. The organization’s mandate is to responsibly promote and grow the tourism industry in the region by implementing effective destination marketing strategies and supporting strategic destination development. Through these efforts, Destination Cape Breton works to enhance the visibility of the island as a premier travel destination while fostering sustainable growth in the local tourism sector.

Wildfire Watch Update - May 30, 2025

FRAMBOISE WILDFIRE – UPDATE
Date: May 30, 2025
Time: 1:45 p.m.
Location: Near Three Rivers Road, Framboise, NS
A forest fire that began around 17:00 near Three Rivers Road in Framboise on May 29,2025, is now being held.
CURRENT STATUS:
- The fire is being held but is not yet fully contained. However, containment is expected soon. Firefighters are establishing a hoseline around the perimeter.
- Stirling and Three Rivers Roads remain closed by the Department of Public Works.
RESPONSE & RESOURCES:
- Cape Breton Regional Municipality resources are on site, including the Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator.
- The Department of Natural Resources has 20 firefighters on site.
- Three County Fire Departments, Framboise, Grand River, and L’Ardoise, are on scene with a total of 25 members.
- Loch Lomond Fire Department is on standby, and St. Peter’s is serving as a staging area.
- A drone is in use to monitor the fire from above.
PUBLIC SAFETY:
- Please stay tuned to official emergency channels for updates.
- Follow all instructions from emergency personnel.
- For emergency assistance, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Public Notice - Road Closure

UPDATE: Roads are now open.
Description
Please be advised that due to a wildfire in the Framboise area and the work of the DNR, Volunteer Fire Departments, the roads in the Framboise area will be closed to traffic until further notice. Specifically the Stirling and Third River Rd area.
Veuillez noter qu’en raison du confinement d’un incendie dans la région de Framboise et des interventions des pompiers bénévoles, la route dans la région de Framboise sera fermée à la circulation jusqu’à nouvel ordre.
Instructions
Please stay clear of the area to allow emergency personnel the proper room to work. If near the area, please be mindful of responding emergency personnel and apparatus.
Veuillez rester à l’écart de la zone afin de laisser suffisamment d’espace au personnel d’urgence pour travailler. Si vous êtes près de la zone, veuillez faire preuve de vigilance envers le personnel d’urgence et les véhicules d’intervention.
