Are you or someone you know interested in serving as a Senator?
The Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments is launching a call for applicants to fill current and upcoming Senate vacancies for Nova Scotia.
What is the Senate?
The Senate is the Upper House of Canada’s Parliament, a diverse group of accomplished Canadians working together to shape the future of our country. It ensures regional interests are defended and creates a platform for underrepresented groups, such as Indigenous Peoples, women, and racialized communities.
What do Senators do?
Senators are business people and scientists, judges and teachers, athletes, community leaders, and senior civil servants who use their lifetimes of expertise to ensure Parliament acts in the best interests of Canadians. They have four responsibilities:
Legislate – In addition to proposing their own bills, senators review legislation passed by the House of Commons.
Represent – Senators represent their province or territory and give a voice to minorities.
Investigate – Through Senate committees, Senators investigate matters that are important to Canadians.
Deliberate – Senators draw on their diverse experiences and backgrounds to debate and vote on bills under consideration.
Once appointed, Senators serve until they reach the mandatory retirement age of seventy-five (75), or until they choose to step down. They are not required to run in an election.
