L’Ardoise, or “Lordways” as they say locally, is a small fishing village on Cape Breton Island’s ruggedly beautiful southern coast. French Acadians started landing there in the early 1700s and a permanent community of fishers and farmers had established themselves by around 1720. The region’s scenic coastline and deep cultural roots will set the tone for an afternoon of tunes and songs in one of the oldest Acadian communities on Cape Breton Island. Fiddler Donna DeWolfe comes from a musical family and her Gaelic-infused playing is deeply rooted in the Cape Breton tradition. She’ll be accompanied by Joël Chiasson who has Acadian roots in Chéticamp. A former member of both Natalie MacMaster and Ashley MacIsaac’s touring bands, Joël has recorded on dozens of albums. Acadian singer-songwriter Delores Boudreau, from nearby Isle Madame, will be joined by Patrick Lamey on guitar for a selection of original songs and old favourites in French and English. And we’ll get our first chance to see exciting young Boston band Scottish Fish. Although these five women are only in their early twenties, they have been performing together for more than a decade. Weaving overlapping fiddle and cello lines between melody and harmony with an intuition that, at times, seems telepathic, they are challenging norms and redefining what to expect from traditional fiddle tunes. And it’s fantastic!
