🌿 Spring is here, and so is tick season.
Warden Lois Landry, on behalf of Council, has proclaimed May as Lyme Disease Awareness Month in Richmond County. It's a great opportunity for all of us to learn more about Lyme disease and how to stay safe while enjoying the outdoors.
Read the full proclamation here.
While there are several types of ticks in Nova Scotia, only the blacklegged tick carries the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. These ticks are found across the entire province, in woods, shrubs, leaf litter, long grass, parks, and even your own backyard. They're tiny, their bites are painless, and that makes them easy to miss.
Here's what you can do:
- ✅ Do daily tick checks after time outdoors
- ✅ Wear long sleeves and pants in wooded or grassy areas
- ✅ Know how to remove a tick properly
- ✅ Check your pets after they've been outside and speak to your vet about tick prevention
