Are you passionate about your community? Want to make a real impact? Richmond County is seeking volunteers to join several Agencies, Boards, Commissions, and Committees (ABCCs). Whether your interests lie in recreation, diversity and inclusion, immigration, or regional development, there’s a place for your voice at the table.

Current Vacancies

1. Inclusive, Diverse, Equitable, and Accessible (IDEA) Advisory Committee

Term: Five (5) years
Vacancy:  Two (2)
Meeting frequency: Monthly

The IDEA Committee provides advice to Richmond County Council and the Village of St. Peter’s Commission, focusing on identifying, preventing, and removing barriers for people with disabilities. This advice applies to programs, services, facilities, and general advocacy efforts. We welcome individuals with lived experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Individual with Ethnocultural and/or linguistic diversity
  • Racialized individuals
  • Gender and sexual diverse individuals
  • Indigenous individuals
  • LGBTQ2S+ individuals
  • Individuals with disabilities or represent an organization that represents people with disabilities
  • Individuals that may not have lived experience related to one or more of the dimensions of diversity; however, would like to support the work of the IDEA Advisory through their allyship

2. Recreation Advisory Committee

Term: Five (5) Years
Vacancy:  One (1)
Meeting frequency: Minimum of four (4) times per year.

The Recreation Advisory Committee supports the development of inclusive and accessible recreation programs and events across Richmond County. It provides recommendations to Council and the Recreation Department to help enhance the quality of life for residents.

3. Cape Breton Local Immigration Partnership (CBLIP) Council

Term: Five (5) Year Term
Vacancy:  One (1)
Meeting frequency: Minimum of four (4) times per year

CBLIP Council members represent organizations that provide services to newcomers, including each municipality in Unama’ki – Cape Breton. Members serve as liaisons and champions of the CBLIP vision and are required to participate in four meetings per year. The CBLIP Council members help to identify gaps and opportunities related to newcomer settlement and support the development and evaluation of CBLIP strategies and activities.

4. Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere Region Association (BLBRA) Board

Term: Three (3) Years
Vacancy:  One (1)
Meeting frequency: Six (6) times per year

The Bras d'Or Lake Biosphere Region Association (BLBRA) is a volunteer, not-for-profit board composed of individuals with diverse expertise, collaborating to achieve our strategic objectives. Member contributions play a key role in advancing initiatives focused on biological conservation, sustainable development, and community capacity building.

5. Destination Cape Breton Association Board (DCBAB)

Term: Three (3) Years
Vacancy:  One (1)
Meeting frequency: Six (6) times per year

Destination Cape Breton is the official destination marketing and management organization for Unama’ki-Cape Breton Island. The organization’s mandate is to responsibly promote and grow the tourism industry in the region by implementing effective destination marketing strategies and supporting strategic destination development. Through these efforts, Destination Cape Breton works to enhance the visibility of the island as a premier travel destination while fostering sustainable growth in the local tourism sector.

6. Strait of Canso Superport Corporation – Strait Superport Board

Term: Three (3) Years, beginning October 2025
Vacancy:  One (1)  
Meeting frequency: Six (6) times per year

The Strait Superport Board oversees the development and promotion of the Strait of Canso as a vital transportation and shipping hub, with objectives including the planning and upgrading of port infrastructure, identifying opportunities for cargo and traffic, and advocating on harbor management issues. The Board is made up of volunteer directors who bring leadership and a deep understanding of marine issues, with members representing various sectors such as shippers, ship service providers, municipalities bordering the Strait, the provincial government, the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce, and First Nations communities.
