Richmond County Council supports the 2021 Census

Be it resolved that:

The Council of the Municipality of the County of Richmond supports the 2021 Census, and encourages all residents to complete their census questionnaire online at www.census.gc.ca.   Accurate and complete census data support programs and services that benefit our community.

Due to increasing cases of COVID-19, restrictions are being tightened up again.  As such, the Regular Council meeting scheduled for tonight (April 26, 2021) will be not be held in person, but instead will be held electronically on Zoom. Cape Breton Special Events Task Force (CB SETF)

The Municipality of Richmond County has partnered with the Nova Scotia Office of Regulatory Affairs and Service Effectives, the Cape Breton Partnership, and the Island’s other municipal units to develop the Cape Breton Special Events Task Force (CB SETF). The CB SETF is a pilot project designed to help festivals and events in Cape Breton navigate regulations. It brings local, provincial, and federal representatives together in a one-stop-shop approach to provide guidance for special event organizers across the Island. Landlords in Richmond County Invited to Connect on Housing Issues

Landlords in Richmond County Invited to Connect on Housing Issues Richmond County, NS - The Strait Richmond Housing Matters Coalition is inviting a landlord representative from Richmond County to participate in addressing housing challenges and opportunities by becoming a coalition member.  The Coalition represents several sectors of our communities including government, health, community services, victims of family violence, seniors, persons with disabilities, and community advocates. 

 New Co-Chair of the Housing Coalition, Warden Amanda Mombourquette, noted that “landlords will bring a valuable private-sector perspective to this group that ensures our actions support innovative solutions to the housing challenges faced in our rural communities.  As members of the Coalition, the new landlord representative will be actively involved in the Coalition’s decision-making processes.”  Warden Mombourquette and Celeste Gotell were welcomed as co-chairs of the group in February 2021. 

Mombourquette further thanked Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton for her previous leadership as Chair of the group, stating “the Coalition has made significant progress building relationships among service providers and that success is in large part due to the Mayor’s commitment to improving housing options for some of our most vulnerable citizens.

The Coalition is committed to advancing our vision of ensuring that inclusive, healthy, affordable, sustainable, and accessible housing is available in Strait Richmond communities. The Strait Richmond Housing Matters Coalition began in December 2018 after a concerned group of citizens interested in housing came together following the October 2018 Community Think Tank – Housing Matters. The Coalition is comprised of individuals and members of organizations that represent a wide spectrum of housing related issues including, community health and social service organizations and municipal representatives. Our vision is inclusive, healthy, affordable, sustainable, and accessible housing is available in Strait Richmond communities.

For Immediate Release - Point Tupper Fire Protection

1Richmond County and the Town of Port Hawkesbury have reached a 10-year deal for Fire Protection in Point Tupper.  This is an historic moment for the region that recognizes the mutually beneficial relationship between the two municipalities, and the people and industries located in Point Tupper.

Both councils investigated a wide variety of options, consulted with industry partners, and consulted with other municipalities across the province to learn from potential best practices.  This was invaluable research to the process, but the reality is that the situation in Point Tupper is unique given the existing highway connections, the geographical locations of departments in both Port Hawkesbury and Richmond, and the mix of industrial, commercial, and residential customers.

The deal includes a $60,000 per year fee that includes an incremental yearly escalation over the 10 years of the agreement.  “I believe both Richmond County Council and Port Hawkesbury Town Council worked diligently to determine a fair and easily auditable service agreement for the benefit of all stakeholders and citizens in both of our municipalities,” said Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton. “Successful negotiations were both the result of open and positive communications with our Councils and Senior staff; and additionally, this positive outcome could not have been possible without the support of the Port Hawkesbury Volunteer Fire Department to provide this essential fire protection service to Point Tupper Industries, businesses and citizens,” she explained.

Warden Amanda Mombourquette noted, “The goal for both parties was to find a fair solution that prioritizes the safety of businesses and residents in Point Tupper, that promotes business growth and development, and that will be financially sustainable now and in the future.  The Louisdale Volunteer Fire Department stepped up to provide fire protection to Point Tupper in the past, and we’re deeply grateful for their service.  Going forward, we’re very pleased to have been able to find a solution that works for all parties beginning on April 1st and continuing for the next decade.”Point Tupper industries have a positive impact on the entire quad-county region, and the province as a whole; all parties felt a responsibility to protect and promote those assets.  The Point Tupper Heavy Industrial Park is a high value location for new business development and for the expansion and diversification of existing businesses.

Both councils also recognize that the relationship between the Town and Richmond is an important one.  This new deal reaffirms their commitment to continue to collaborate on additional initiatives such as Cape Breton South Recruiting for Health to attract healthcare professionals to the region, Strait of Canso development, the Strait-Richmond Housing Coalition, and a variety of other activities that are focused on improving our economy and quality of life.
